It is exactly the same when I go shopping. I have a certain sense of style that usually consists of jeans and a t-shirt and occasionally the odd skirt – but very rarely! When I go shopping for clothes on my own, I will not venture outside of my normal “fashion rules.” Even if something is in fashion that I think that I could maybe get away with, there is always something that holds me back and I never end up buying it.
Take leggings for example. They are back in fashion and I distinctively remember wearing them in the eighties! So what is about this fashion item that I feel nervous about now? I even went shopping and bought a pair a few days ago, but for some reason, I can’t quite bring myself to wear them. Simply because it is outside of my normal sense of style, and I don’t think they would suit me.
The way I look at it is, whenever you see these new fashion trends, you always seem to see them on very young, very skinny models that have prefect skin and beautiful hair. How many people do you know that actually look like this? I know very few!
With that in mind, I think it is the norm for “normal” women all over the world to think that because they are not built like these size zero supermodels, they simply cannot get away with the latest fashion and styles.
Shopping for many women is a minefield, so many fashions, so many styles, and yet nothing that would suit! Whenever I found myself on a shopping trip with my friends, I find them attempting to wear these daring styles, and actually looking good in them. However, the fashion items that they have bought never seem to materialize again. The purchases spend many months hidden in the back of the wardrobe before, eventually, being given to a younger, skinnier friend or relative. It is a never ending cycle.
I wish that I could go shopping and go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. A whole new bunch of outfits in a completely different style to that I am used to. A wardrobe full of fashion that supermodels would be envious of! But that is all it is; a wish, a dream, a goal that will never happen. For now, I am happy with my sense of style. I like my jeans and my black trousers for work. I feel comfortable in them, and I would rather feel comfortable and fade into the background of all the other black-trouser wearers, than stand out and be made to feel like a fool!
