Should US companies be required to provide equal pay to women and men? – Part 59
I have heard this type of statistic thrown around for a long while “women on average still make only $.77 of every $1.00 that a man earns for an equivalent position.” I think it is to point out that men make more than women. Sure if we want to look at this one element in society the solution is simplistic. Just pay them the same. But then again lets look at another element in society where men are expected and usually only sought after if they make more money.out of every 100 couples or so that I know I’d guesstimate that less than 5% (I think I’m being generous) of the women make more than the men in the relationship. (Not counting family money, actual earnings) Does this mean that we need a requirement for couples to earn the same? I mean eventually if we stick to this societal norm the men that make the same pay that are on the bottom of the pay scale will just not be financially eligible to be in a relationship. I guess the answer for them is to make more money.oh but wait, that means we have an automatic pay raise built in for the opposite sex and well..vicious circle time. Of course, that sounds silly and I’m not saying that the status quo is perfect; it’s a work in progress that started with the equal pay act. But let’s be realistic and recognize that there are a variety of other societal forces at work that come into play and can have an effect on what people get paid.
Another thing to take into consideration is that Women have only recently come on strong with starting their own businesses and taking higher college graduation rates than men. Over the next ten to twenty years this will translate to an even closer gap or perhaps pull even. There is no magic bullet that will allow for equal pay as of a certain date in time. The influencing factors that will move the needle are already in play. The more women are CEO’s especially the one’s who start their own companies and retain ownership thereof the more the gap will close. The gap does not exist because the male and female office workers pay scale is out of whack. Those Middle American jobs are already pretty fine tuned from my perspective. I am very liberal and support rights of equality. I have worked in accounting for about a dozen or so companies in CA both large and small. From my perceptions it’s the top of the food chain that you’ll find the vast difference in wages / options earned.
Legislative solutions for this issue just simply are disastrous because they end up as broad strokes trying to cut acutely. This in turn is more often than not manipulated into some meaning that was never intended. A good example of this for those that may think I’m crazy is the tax exemption that was pushed through to stimulate the economy through the purchase of heavy machinery. As long as the tonnage was of a certain limit then things like cranes and freight trucks and dump trucks could be some of the items eligible for the accelerated exclusion. Low and behold large extra heavy SUV sales took off through the roof. Just what we needed to go “green” and boost the economy. Well at least the auto factories did better business at the expense of the tax base some of them may have even been American companies.
