Plus size women fashion tips: Finding the right plus size jeans – Part 5
Wanted: a great pair of jeans, not just any great pair, but that one special pair that becomes your favorite because it hits you in all the right places, and even makes people stare at how good you look in them.
We are all so very lucky to live in an age where jeans come in so many shapes and styles and colors and materials… There is no reason to live in the world of the standard five-pocket classic jean, unless you want to, because there are a plethora of options out there for every size and shape under the sun.
First you need to look at your waist and hip measurements, and then compare it to the size chart of the brand you are purchasing. Some brands are more generous in the waist, some moreso in the hips, but you need to fit your jeans to one or the other. And don’t forget that you can always get your jeans altered, or alter them yourself if you are skilled in the ways of the tailoring world. For those with larger hips, you’re going to want to fit it to your hips… for those with a more apple shape, you’ll want to fit the jeans to your waist because most jeans have the hips proportionately larger than the waist.
Then the fit itself… these are getting more complex than trying to order a coffee at a certain specialty coffeehouse from Seattle. There’s boot-cut, straight cut, boyfriend cut, wide leg, skinny leg, reverse fit, classic fit, seat lifters, waist cinchers… Whew! And that’s just the beginning. Most brands have their own names for these as well to make them seem more exclusive, so in those cases you’ll just have to try them on or ask.
For the apple shaped among us, the straight cut or ‘boyfriend cut’ (read that as waist is about the same size as the hip) would be the most flattering. Try to avoid skinny leg jeans if you plan to wear a lot of oversized tops because this would just throw off your body proportions visually. For pear shaped girls, boot cuts will probably be just about your best friend ever (as far as denim goes). And for the hourglass gang, both bootcut and wide leg will do nicely. It is all about creating a look that is well fitted and compliments your shape. And likewise, if you are a tall or a petite, don’t get an inseam that doesn’t fit you simply because the rest of the jean does UNLESS you are going to have them altered (easier for petites than it is for us tall-legged gals).
So don’t be afraid to try on different types of jeans, or to have someone alter than for you. If you don’t like them with a little stretch, say so, and if you like to have that little bit of stretch that most jeans have these days… insist on it! Lots of bigger labels like Seven and Baby Phat are selling lines for the plus sized girls, so if you like higher fashion jeans but could never wear them… now is the time. Go out there and find your perfect match!
Plus size women fashion tips: Finding the right plus size jeans – Part 6
Even my skinniest friends complain saying how frustrating it is to shop for jeans … so we plus sized girls are not alone!
For most of us…it seems if you find something that fits right in the waist then the thighs are too tight or vice versa. I get so frustrated with jeans that ride up or slide down.
I must tell you though, I spent the afternoon recently at Lane Bryant and I promise I do not work for them. They have a great new amazing way to tell you EXACTLY what type of jeans would fit your body perfectly. The new system is called “The right fit…Not all curves are treated equal”
They measure your waist and ask you a few questions. They have found a way to attack ALL of the issues we have in finding jeans. You might even check out their website because it allows you to answer the questions online to see what fit is right for you…you will see how much sense it makes when you answer the questions.
I am also tall so I really have problems with jeans and pants … but I encourage you to try out this new discovery! I was so impressed and delighted that someone finally discovered a way to help me find the perfect fitting jean : )
Plus size women fashion tips: What not to wear – Part 21
There are many things you do not want to wear if you are plus sized.
First off, look for colors you know you are comfortable in, don’t wear bright neon colors they just make you stick out more.
Secondly, just because a lot of the plus sized clothing has silly patterns doesn’t mean you have to wear them. It’s better to stick with something completely plain. Plain colors like black and brown are the most slimming. And although those colors may not go well together, alone they can make a deference. Darker colors are better on plus sized women; it doesn’t make them stand out as much that helps with self confidence. Other colors you can try are dark blues and greens. If you feel good in light colors, try blues or reds.
Next, make sure you know your size. You don’t want to wear something that is too tight or too big. Something that fits just right will cover the things you don’t want people to see, but not make it look like you are hiding in rags. A tip for finding the best fit is to try on several different sizes with one shirt; all brands are different so expand your choices.
Lastly, make sure you are completely comfortable. There is nothing worse than going out in public in something you weren’t to keen on wearing in the first place. If you want to wear an outfit you just bought but aren’t so sure, wear it around the house a few times before going out in public. Feeling good in what you wear makes all the difference.
Plus size women fashion tips: What not to wear – Part 23
The women that walk into my office vary in all shapes and sizes. I never understood why a heavy woman would wear strips on her outfits. This is the golden rule that every woman should know. Maybe they forgot that rule but they wear them anyway. Another mistake heavier women make is wearing very baggy pants with a tight shirt thinking she is showing off cleavage but all she is showing off is her stomach and arms.
If you dress to suit it can still be sexy and pretty. Normal fitting pants will do the trick with a loose top. If you insist on wearing a dress for more formal events then wear something that hangs below the knee with a plunging back not neck. I was never a plus size and for the record I always found that term useless and derogatory like big boned. I call it what it is, heavier.
Plus size women fashion tips: Accentuating your best features – Part 4
Being plus size simply means being bigger than the average size. It doesn’t mean you are ugly or unattractive. It just means that if a survey of body sizes were taken, you would fall above both mean and median.
Accentuating your best features applies to everyone. For plus size women the rule is the same; so long as you stick to your size! Once you accept yourself as your Creator made you, you can let yourself celebrate you.
For plus size tips, try these:
1 Wear clothes that fit. From underwear to accessories, the rule is to wear what fits. Wear you bras, g-strings, halter-necks; and whatever else you please in your own size. Attempting to mask size in smaller clothes only make you look tacky, cheap, uncoordinated and BIGGER.
2 Wear colors that complement your skin tone. Being plus size requires moderation sometimes because you do not want a wrong choice to be made more pronounced. Always match colors that maintain some semblance of balance.
3 Learn to minimize your largest feature. Wrap tops under a supportive bra will minimize large breasts, longer-length tops will minimize large hips, darker colors will make you look slimmer, detailed designs will draw attention, high heels for shorter women, etc.
4 Accessorize to enhance your overall look – earrings, bangles, scarves, belts, shoes, watches hair color and make-up all help to draw attention to color and away from ‘problem’ areas.
Plus size women fashion tips: Dressing for your body type – Part 9
Everyones body is different, so it is important to dress to what suits you and makes you feel comfortable. When you next go out shopping for clothes don’t just rush around the shop picking up what you think will look good spend time looking at different styles and types of clothes from Grey suits to a bright pink dress, when you have found clothes that you like even if they are out of you normal clothing range go into the dressing room and try them all on you should even pick up accessories that can go with them. When you have the clothes on imagine yourself wearing them for working or going out or even just dosing around. My tip is that i always take a person with me and a camera phone so i can try on clothes and ask my “friends” advise and take a picture of me wearing the clothes so i can see exactly how i look. Dressing for you body type is important but so is feeling comfortable remember that.

Plus size women fashion tips: What not to wear – Part 6
What not to wear if you’re a plus size?
The first and most important rule when you are buying clothes is that you should only buy something that makes you feel good. Everybody knows that when you put on an outfit you love, then you’ll light up, you act a certain way and you carry yourself a certain way, but if you put on some make-do’ clothes that you don’t like then the reverse happens, and it shows.
So, if you take something out of your wardrobe or off the clothes rack in a store and you don’t enjoy putting it on, then that is a sure sign you shouldn’t be wearing it, no matter what the price tag says. That would be my first fashion tip to everybody, regardless of size.
The next tip, only reveal the amount of skin you are honestly comfortable with revealing, don’t wear a mini-skirt just because it’s in fashion unless you honestly feel good in it and then if you do you will wear it well. The same goes for showing off your cleavage or tummy, if it’s really and truly you then go for it, otherwise wear something else.
Color, we can’t all wear every color going, so again if the color doesn’t do something for you, then don’t wear it, it should compliment your skin tone and hair color. We all know that black can be very slimming and if that’s what you feel good in then wear it and a splash of color can make all the difference, a shirt, scarf or accessories can transform an outfit very quickly.
Good quality, well cut clothing for plus size women can be quite expensive but it would be worth buying a few items that you really feel good in and then buying plenty of cheap accessories to create different looks.
Finally, another tip for all women, it’s important to have good fitting underwear as these can often make or break an outfit, there’s nothing to spoil an outfit more than graying bra straps falling off shoulders, so invest well in this department.
Plus size women fashion tips: Holiday must haves – Part 2
Every woman should have a stunning white blouse and a great black Holiday skirt…even if she is NOT plus sized.
Let me tell you why. Having these essentials in your wardrobe can take you anywhere during the Holiday season. Have you ever noticed that the designer Carolina Herrera ALWAYS wears a white blouse and a black skirt? Why?It is classic…it always looks wonderful.
You can jazz it up with a great necklace or pin. A great pashmina scarf or pearls. Get a colorful scarf and wrap it at your waist and pick up one of the colors in the scarf and add matching earrings. You can even wear the same black skirt and white blouse to many holiday parties by simply changing accessories.
Another great thing, and maybe the most important is that when wearing something so elegantly simple you never have to worry about being under dressed or even worse OVER dressed. You will fit where ever you go in this ensemble and for whatever occasion during the Holiday season.
Plus size women fashion tips: What not to wear – Part 9
Well shouldn’t we all by now know what not to wear? Haven’t we all watched those television shows addressing the common sense rules of what not to wear; read all the magazines and perused the latest advice on this subject offered by so called experts on the subject. Of course we have. Likely we have done so more than most. If you are like me you have probably been left wondering the same thing, can you follow the same rules that those women who are not blessed with the same dimensions we are? Do those rules apply to you? Or maybe you wonder, just when will someone provide us with some simple rules to follow that are not relegating us to ugly, shapeless, all black, or other fade into the background clothing; or on the flip side of this scenario those bold as you please prints that seem to grow profusely across our bodies in colors and flora that are not found anywhere in nature providing a map of our terrain that would have been better left uncharted.
Do you sometimes wish, as I do that someone would consider that millions of us do not stop at the rack of size 0 to 8. When you watch those fashion make-over shows, do you wish that just one in every one hundred there was someone who faintly resembled you? When you walk into the stores that are supposed to specialize in clothing that is your size do you want to see the mannequins’ actually wearing clothing that hasn’t been pinned in back? Or even better do you wish that in the department stores, way back hidden in the back where they sell Plus sizes the mannequins’ were actually dressed and accessorized in clothing that you could find in that section of the store. I say yes to all of this.
Unfortunately retail, whether on-line or brick and mortar has not fully caught up to those of us who are blessed with dimensions on the fuller side. So we have to rely upon our mirrors, our friends, each other, and some sensible “rules”. Here are mine for all occasions.
