Do ads that use sex to sell their products degrade women? – Part 15

Advertisements are not degrading to woman because the ladies that we see in sexually-explicit mediums choose to look the way that their contract states. All over the world beauty is sought. Most people would like to look attractive to other people and when they see an ad. that depicts a model of beauty it might not match the way they see themselves in the mirror. Usually if a person feels degraded by something it means that they are offended. Beauty is not offensive and thus it is used to make money by placing a sexy image to a particular product. The intention of these marketing companies to attract attention to their product by using any legal means available. The woman of these advertisements are compensated according to the agreement of their contract and if they where degraded they would not have signed the document and the sex-appeal would not be published or placed on television.

If I where to launch an ad. campaign and my marketing team told me that more money would be made if we hired an attractive lady or man then I would be willing to contract for their representation. The intention of putting this hypothetical team together would be for the sole purpose of procuring more credits in the bank not to harm anyone. There is nothing degrading about receiving a check for your looks: in fact it is a complement in my opinion. The human body is a thing of beauty and there is not an ethical reason why we shouldn’t promote it as such. If you feel degraded because some one has hired a pretty model to sell any product then you most likely are offended by what you see in the mirror and not on T.V. or posters. It is a scapegoat to feel degraded by an advertisement.

These companies are intentionally tring to make money not an issue with woman. If you truly are offended by the human body then you might want to think about not being human. However I do not believe that there is surgery for species-reassignment-surgery: just kidding. Seriously, if sex is your problem with civilization and the way it operates then you might not want to promote procreation because we need sex to make more babies. There is nothing degrading about giving another person a desire to make-love, so way not sell a product in the process. It is very inefficient to complain about what is seen on T.V. because you have the liberty of turning it off. The companies also have the liberty of selling any product within the confines of the law that they so choose and the buyer will be turned on to that product if they desire.

Should US companies be required to provide equal pay to women and men? – Part 80

I feel that women and men shouldn’t be put into two separate genders in the business world. If you are qualified for a job and do it well, whether a female or male, you should receive the pay deserved. If you suck at your job, don’t receive great pay or promotions, and just happen to be a female… you don’t deserve it. If you suck, don’t receive great pay or promotions, and just so happen to be a male…you don’t deserve it either.

I don’t feel gender is really looked at anymore unless it is a labor job or where maximum physical strength is needed. This isn’t the early nineteen hundreds anymore. Men and women are equal now and any business who belittles that idea presently, apparently isn’t a good business man or women.(and I hope they see that).

So yes men and women should be paid the same for a job they are inquiring about or are already employed at. We are capable of the same strengths, work ethics, and leadership skills. Regardless if I am a female, male, or anything in between.

Best Paying Careers For Women – In Fashion

Having spent the last 9 years in seemingly the most glamorous and desirable industry to women, fashion I am often asked about the careers and opportunities for women in fashion and more often what are the best paying careers for women in fashion today?

The beauty about the fashion industry is that it caters for the creative and the business savvy as well as encompassing the back end blood sweat and tears in producing apparel for the Australian and global markets.

Let’s look at the best paying careers for women in fashion…

For the business savvy roles for example Brand Manager, Product Manager or Retail Buyer you need a qualification in business, commence, economics or marketing. Candidate perception is often misunderstood with these roles and in the past 4 years they have become the glamour roles of the industry. The misconception largely surrounds the intense business acumen required to be a success. You need to be numbers savvy, have strong skills in product forecasting, budgets, calculation of EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) and have strong analytical skills and margin and profit focus. All too often candidates see for 15% fascination with the product side of these roles and fail to see that 85% of the job is spent behind an excel spreadsheet.

Salaries in Australia for Brand Manager, Product Manager and Retail buyer vary greatly and are very dependent on the size of the company. With this said, some of the larger brands are the poorer payers. Brand Manager, Product Manager and Retail Buyers earn above national average to executive salaries at the top end. Longevity plays a big role in securing top dollar so proving yourself is essential. Your success will be measured on year in and year out results and growth so 18 months here and there is not going to get you into the best paying careers for women in fashion. You need to have some creative edge in these roles, so a sense of style and fashion is essential as much of the creative team is likely to report to you. These roles will see you provide product direction, range planning and product lifecycle analysis as a response to market forces and trends as well as the financial management aspects..

The creative roles in fashion are probably the most deceptive. Design is hard work and again longevity is going to go along way to allowing you to achieve your financial salary goals. My best advice when negotiating a role in design is to negotiate your increases when you commence. One of the biggest problems in increasing salaries once you start working is the lack of a remuneration plan at commencement.

To be a fashion designer you will need to have studied fashion design at any one of the various International Design schools. Getting accolades will also help. Make sure your design projects reflect commercial fashion and if they don’t leave them out of your portfolio. It is very off putting to an employer of a fashion designer to see arty unwearable fashion in the recruitment process.

As a fashion designer you will not only be responsible for the design of the ranges within the product budgets and brand values but you will be responsible for the outcome, market acceptance or rejection! It is very rare for a design graduate to score a top job as a fashion designer but occasionally it does happen. Your career path is however more likely to commence behind the scenes as a designers assistant. You will sketch, source fabrics, trims and accessories, cut samples, prepare range books and coordinate the design timeline with the pattern makers and sample machinists. Not too much creative here but at least you will be close to the action.

Prove yourself and you will be introduced to designing your own portion of a range with a bit of luck (and blood sweat and tears). As a designer assistant (graduate) in fashion expect to earn average national salaries. You will be competing with a big group of graduates all chasing the dream so embrace anything on offer and be realistic about the brand opportunities offered to you. It is no time to be a brand snob when you have just graduated from design school. If you decide to be brand specific be prepared to wait tables as it may be required for a while until the right break comes you way.

As a Range Designer of a visible and market identified brand expect to earn anywhere from average to executive salaries at the end. When so much hinges on the talents of a designer you would expect higher paying salaries, however, simple supply and demand principles unfortunately come into play. The best news is that when longevity kicks in (if you haven’t started your own label) the role of Design Director comes with a hefty pay packet. As Design Director of a fashion brand expect to earn serious executive dollars. Achieve this in fashion design and you have made it!

Let’s look at the engine room; Production Management, Operations and Supply Chain. These roles are the most critical to a fashion operation. Apparel may not be a perishable commodity but if it is late into store it may as well be. With the changes in supply chain and imports the production of apparel in the last 10 years has changed the nature of these roles significantly. In fashion production, operations and supply chain you can expect to frequently travel to operations particularly in the east and work in some quite deceptive conditions. Let me qualify this by saying that your negotiation skills need to be razor sharp and your ability to identify the right sources is essential.

In terms of qualifications you need a fashion production qualification, business or logistics supply chain management qualification or similar. Garment construction knowledge is essential. You will work hands on and be required to make the call on garment construction issues so it is imperative that you know the lingo. At the low end Production Managers in fashion earn just above national salaries with Operations and Supply Chain Managers earning exceptional executive dollars.

Whilst I have purposely focused on the highest paying roles for women within the fashion industry the obvious roles of General Manager, CEO and Company Director form the highest paying roles in the sector. It is difficult to focus on these roles when the opportunities are quite few are far between. Some outstanding women have achieved these roles in fashion with Sue Morphet of Pacific Brands crashing through the glass ceiling some years ago and moving up the scale with full force. Sue is of particular inspiration having conquered such an exceptional role within an established and traditional brand. There are other women like Sue earning exceptional salaries within the fashion sector, but the roles are few and far between. Salaries at this top end can reach beyond half a million dollars including bonuses and share options.

More Bizarre Beauty Products

As people become more concerned about their appearance and desperately want to hide their real age, there’s no stopping them from trying out weird and wacky beauty rituals. Here is a sampling of the latest beauty regimens that prove that truth is stranger than fiction.

Feeling sad and gloomy because your boyfriend or girlfriend dumped you? Try a 24-karat gold facial to lift your spirits. First unveiled at Tokyo’s Beauty World 2007 Expo, this procedure was developed by the Chinese company Umosen and costs a hefty $300. Although the facial makes you look like an Egyptian mummy, users claim it’s good for the skin. You can get it in over 20 salons across Japan.

This may sound like a lot of bull but for £85, Hari’s Salon in London will make your hair more manageable with a bull semen conditioner. Touted as the Viagra for hair, this deep conditioning protein treatment is made of semen from the Aberdeen Angus bull mixed with the Iranian plant Katera.

“The bull semen promises to both strengthen and add shine to your hair. The masque is odorless, and is massaged into the hair and scalp and left on for 30 minutes. Then the product is rinsed out and your hair is styled as normal,” according to Amy White in AssociatedContent.com.

“It may make you feel better that this is organic semen from a pedigreed Angus bull, fresh from the farm and no bull is harmed in the production of this product. But even if this hair conditioner does deliver the promised long lasting shine, the ‘ick’ factor may be too great to ignore,” she added.

An Israeli health spa has a creepy, crawly new treatment for its numerous clients: snake massage. For $70, the masseur works on your body aided by six snakes. Don’t worry – the snakes aren’t poisonous but they’re guaranteed to give you a tingling sensation as they slither across your body.

“Ada Barak, who owns the spa, said the touch of snakes helps soothe joints and has therapeutic effects. She uses California and Florida king snakes, corn snakes, and milk snakes for her treatments,” said KNBC.com.

For those who work their butts off, they can find comfort at several spas in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles that offer unique butt facials. Boldly going where no man has gone before, these enterprising spas will prepare your fanny for that beach romp you’ve long planned. They’ll make your butt smooth and tight with a relaxing body scrub and rid it of acne, cellulite, and other skin problems with the help of microdermabrasion.

“For a mere $650 -$800 for a hour-long session, you can get a butt facial that spa owners promise will tighten, lift and tone the derrieres of clients who wear thongs or go au natural to the beach,” said Stone Martindale in MonstersandCritics.com.

“The derriere is an area that is often neglected, but people are concerned about keeping it in shape and there aren’t many other spa treatments that pay attention to this area,” according to Nicole Contos, owner of the Smooth Synergy Cosmedical Spa in New York City.

Too radical for you? Visit http://www.dermaxin.com for details about Dermaxin. This moisture-rich cream will eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, and give your skin a healthy glow. Dermaxin is a safe alternative to costly anti-wrinkle injections without the discomfort, side effects, and unnatural look associated with the latter.

Possibility of modern women losing their feminine grace – Part 9

Are modern women losing their “feminine grace?” Are you kidding me? That term is insulting to me. It concerns me that this would be anyones concern. The problems that exist in my life rarely revolve around the loss of my “feminine grace.”

As a woman, I worry about being respected in the work place, about splitting up the chores at home fairly, about being respected even though I don’t look like a model, about being respected when I go out of the house when I’m looking my best, about being listened to… Am I concerned about the loss of “feminine grace?” I would be happy to do away with such notions.

The role of women is expanding. It is a wonderful thing to lose the stigma that all women should have some admirable unifying quality. Women should be admired and respected for their unique qualities.

If we are to be concerned about a loss of grace it should be a concern for the totality of the society. We are losing grace amongst men and women equally. We are becoming a blunt and callous people. Going are the days of chivalrous gentlemen and dainty ladies. Hopefully, with these things go our pretenses. Hopefully what is left behind is something real, that we can all live up to without the pressures put upon us to live up to romantic artifice.

Makeup tips for dark skin

Beauty can be at its best even in women with dark skin. More and more beauty products are out in the market to cater to the needs of dark skinned women. Experimenting and getting expert beauty advise can help women to find the right blend of colors in make-up that exactly matches the skin tone.

Make up guidelines for women with dark skin:

All women want to look at their best on all occasions. Healthy skin is essential and hence similar to women with fair skin, cleansing, toning , moisturizing and applying sunblock must never be avoided.

Foundation: It is one of the most popular cosmetic item for black women. Experiment a variety of shades to find the best shade. Choose shades that exactly matches the neck colour. Foundation color must be selected based on seasons. Choose one for summer and another for winter. Matte finish foundation is better for oily skin while shimmer foundation is best for dry skin. For women with normal skin, a foundation type in between may suit the best. If the skin color is uneven, use a combination of two different shades. When applied in the right way, both shades together would cover up uneven skin tone.

Powder:

Most women would avoid using powders, but in case of oily skin it takes away the shine. Choose any translucent shade. Dust away the excess for perfection.

Concealer: It can hide any type of imperfections from simple blemishes to pigmentation. A flesh color would provide an even skin tone imparting radiance to the skin.

Blush: A blush adds more life to face. Shades of blush that matches with the lipstick color adds more beauty. A thin layer may work best for the day and a double thick layer may work best for evenings and special occasions. Pink, red or burgundy shades are perfect.

Eyeliner: Use an eyeliner to highlight the beauty of the eye. Dark shade of pencils are great but liquid eyeliner would give a much thinner line. For women with smaller eyes, restrict eyeliner to lower lashes.

Eyeshadow: It is better to avoid an eyeshadow as it provides the most daring look. For women who are particular about eyeshadows, choose natural or white shades. A shade of gold may look complimentary for the evening hours.

Mascara: Make up would be incomplete with a mascara. Use a branded high quality mascara for both upper and lower eyelashes.

Lipsticks: Plum, burgundy, pink or berry shades would be perfect. Avoid the shades of orange. Matte finish lipsticks would be the perfect one. Avoid using it in excess. Match the lipstick with blush and eye makeup.

Look smart with the perfect makeup!

Calorie guide for women – Part 1

Eating right in this day and age is never easy. The amount of foods out there proclaiming to be ‘lite’ or ‘diet’ is so wide and varied it is hard to know which ones are genuinely good for your health and which are merely using such words to increase their sales. The bottom line is food manufacturers want you to buy their products. And given women’s obsession with looking good and dieting it stands to reason they will try and market their products at us using any words and phrases they can.

So how do you know what to buy? Well the best answer to this question is to ignore the slogans and marketing guff on the front of the packet and turn it right around to the ingredients and nutritional guide. Firstly, read what they have put into the product. If the first few ingredients sound more like a maths quiz than food you will know for a start this food item is not all that healthy. The more fresh food in the product, the better it is for you. And don’t be fooled by the different pseudonyms sugar is disguised under. Words like glucose, sucrose and sccharin really mean sugar. The second thing you need to look at is the nutritional information. If you are serious about watching how many calories you consume, this has to be compulsory reading before you buy any product. The key things to read is the total calories per serving or per 100g and the amount of saturated fats and sugars that are in the product. A rule of thumb is if there is more than 10g of either saturated fat or 20g of sugar per 100grams of product, you know that this is one you shouldn’t be eating as part of your regular diet.

We all know that eating healthy is what we should be doing and that fruit and veges should be part of our everyday diet. The hard thing is actually following this advice. In my experience, the key to enjoying healthy foods is to eat a variety of foods all the time and to cook different meals. Making a salad with just vegetables isn’t exactly that inspiring to eat. But adding some extra flavors such as feta and sun-dried tomato or garlic croutons and bacon takes any salad from the ordinary to something that you know you are going to enjoy eating.

Being healthy is easy really if you are committed to shopping right, checking those nutrition guides and finding some recipes that inspire you to cook with more fruit and veges and less fats and sugars

Bon appetitt!
