Women: Health benefits of lifting weights – Part 22

Women should not be afraid of weight training. On the contrary, they should pursue it as an integral part of a well rounded preventive and rehabilitative exercise program

Women are not genetically made to grow bulky muscles and achieve a body builder’s physic by natural means. The female body lacks the amount of testosterone (hormone responsible for increasing muscle size) that men have. So, unless a woman uses anabolic steroids, weight training will only help her get the firm and fit cellulite-free body that she wants.

Some of the benefits of lifting weights are:

* increased lean body mass

* increased metabolism and therefore, increased fat burning capacity

* easier performance of daily activities

* stronger muscles, tendons and ligaments, which helps to prevent injuries

* stronger bones and decreased risk of osteoporosis

* decreased risk of low back pain

I would recommend the following guidelines for women that want to begin a weight training program:

1) It should be progressive in nature. Go slowly and creat a solid foundation. Let your muscles get used to the training load step by step.

2) For beginners, each training session has to provide a stimulus for all the major muscle groups: chest, back, shoulders, biceps, triceps, quadriceps (front of leg), hamstrings (back of leg), calves and abdominals.

3) Use mostly free weights such as: dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls, tubing, etc.

4) Include 2-3 weight training sessions per week.

SAMPLE TRAINING SESSION

10 Exercises One for each major muscle group

Number of sets per exercise: 2 sets

Number of repetitions per set 12-15

Rest in between sets 30-45 seconds

For your 1st set pick a weight that is challenging, but that will allow you to finish the number of repetitions without extraneous effort. For your 2nd set, increase the weight in about 5-10%. You should finish the repetitions of this set with difficulty.

These are same exercises that I would recommend for each muscle group. For detailed information about motion patterns I strongly suggest you visit www.exrx.net. They have great templates with pictures and explanations that shows you exactly how to perform each exercise.

CHEST-Dumbbell press/Barbell press/Push ups

BACK-Barbell row/Cable pulldown/Bent over dumbbell row

QUADRICEPS-Squats/Lunges/Step ups

SHOULDERS (front)- Shoulder press/Dumbbell front raise

SHOULDERS (side)-Lateral Raise/Upright row

BICEPS – Bicep curls/Preacher bicep curls

TRICEPS – Tricep kickbacks/Tricep Exptensions/Dips

CALVES – Single leg calf raise/Seated calf raise

ABDOMINALS – Crunch/Leg Lifts/Oblique Crunch

When you lift weights always remember:

* Breath. Inhale when you on the eccentric part (when muscle relaxes) and exhale on the concentric part (when muscle contracts).

* Keep your body aligned. When you do exercises standing up, your hips should always be tilted slightly forward and your abs firmly contracted to support your spine.

* Only when you have mastered the movement with the current weight, go ahead and increase it. Never increase more than 5-10% at a time.

* You should do this full body format 2-3 days a week for at least 12 weeks. Then you can start thinking about splitting it. These means working only 2-3 muscle groups per training session but at a greater intensity

Womens fashion: Dressing classy in your 30s, 40s, and 50s

Take three fashion innovators, plus Oprah. Stacy London-a fashion guru from the television show, “What Not to Wear,” Lloyd Boston-author of “Before You Put That On,” and Charla Krupp-author of “How Not To Look Old”. Put them together and you have a fantastic Oprah show offering down-to-earth guidance about how women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s can update their clothing to look timeless and classy. Also presented, of course, were the various frumpy, dumpy, grumpy-looking women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

In a discussion of the “#1″ wardrobe mistake many women make, each fashionista had his/her own idea. Mr. Boston mentioned he believed the “#1″ mistake women make is during shopping for clothes. He says many women “shop by the number (i.e. size) rather than the fit.” Doing so results in incredibly bad selections regarding the fit of the clothing articles. He encourages women to “forget about the number.”

Ms. London, on the other hand, feels the “#1″ fashion error made by women is their over concern with “being trendy.” Ms. London firmly expressed that each woman must “consider” her own body type, age, and lifestyle in her selection of clothing. “That’s how to decide what’s gonna work for you.”

Ms. Krupp’s idea of the ” #1″ mistake-and I quote, is, “Women in America are so hung up on comfort that they walk around in clothes like they’re going to the gym.” Hmm, I don’t like where this discussion is going. And can you believe, Ms. Krupp actually went on to state that “sneakers should not be worn on the street?” More rambling followed about how, as women, we don’t get respect from others when we dress in such a relaxed way.

Okay, now they have truly hit all of our “sore spots” in terms of the fashion habits of women, at least those of us in our 30s, 40s, and 50s. Where can they go from here?

Well, actually, Ms. London did a fine job of “making over” women from each of the age groups of focus. Beginning first with a 30-something woman, Ms. London wowed the audience, selecting a tight leather jacket, a sweet knit top, snug jeans, and some bitchin’ black boots by Cole Haan.

Using patent leather, Ms. London brought a 40-year-old mother up to the 21st century in black patent boots, a cashmere sweater dress, and what else? A Dolce and Gabbana bag.

Keeping with the patent leather trend, a 50-something woman strutted out with dark pants, a long, high-waisted print blouse, patent shoes, and a patent leather bag. Now this woman looked

Plus size women fashion tips: Finding the right plus size jeans – Part 4

No matter what size you are, we all want a great pair of jeans that we just love to wear, then when we find them we wear them night and day until they fall to pieces and then we struggle to find another pair ‘just like them’ – sound familiar? Ever wished you had bout six pairs when you found the first pair? I know I have!

I have found that the most flattering jeans for curvy women are the bootcut range. They are fitted close around the bottom and thighs and then just widen from below the knee – a perfect cut will mean you can just see the toes of your shoes! I love this style, in the UK I have found that Dorothy Perkins do a good range, with various leg lengths for us shorties or for those of you who are taller, my only bug bear with them is that not all stores stock larger sizes. The other good shop is Evans, a store designed for women size 16 plus. Both stores seem to have the cut just right and also understand that we don’t want jeans with a waistband on the pubic bone! New Look are also getting their act together with their Inspire range too. They are actually beginning to understand that just because we don’t look like we eat lettuce all day doesn’t mean we don’t want to look smart and trendy.

I would always advise you to try the jeans on in store, I know some stores have communal changing areas which can be disconcerting, but take a friend with you, they can shield you from prying eyes and can also give you an honest opinion of the fit. Every manufacturer styles and shapes their jeans differently, the cut is different too, this is a problem encountered by anyone regardless of size so unfortunately the only way is trial and error. Once you find a manufacturer and style that suit you, stick with them! Don’t cut the labels out and forget where you bought them, otherwise you will end up like me, wishing you had bought six pairs of jeans rather than the one!

Trends in womens fashions: Morality, economics and individualism – Part 4

Yes, Beyonce rocks the best stilettos, Gwen Stefani has the best style and Mary J Blige rocks the best of both. Yes, you rarely catch them without diamonds on their necks, Marc Jacob Fifi bags on their arms, And yes, so can you.

Here are some of the stores currently rocking the latest styles at the greatest (and lowest) prices.

Forever 21 wins for the best selection and prices for earrings and necklaces. The store keeps with its color palette when dealing with accessories, making it easy to match earrings with their outfits.

H&M, and Forever 21 have a wide selection of the 3-inch belts that have owned the title of best fashion accessory this season.

Bakers rules in “ShoeLand”. Most of their shoes are under $50 and there is always a sale on something in that store. When you find those cute Manolo look-alikes, stride over to their purse section. They usually have purses to match some of their shoes. Now how Diva is that?

While making plans to go to that hot summer party, don’t forget to check out the sale racks of Wet Seal, Rampage and Forever 21. These stores are filled with club clothes at reasonable prices. They are also heavy on trends and minimal on material, but it’s okay to show a little thigh this season. Short shorts are back for instance; so get out the Nair.

If you need work clothes or just a day look, go to H&M. Also heavy on trends, this store will give you that Sex in the City look without limiting you to eating Ramon Noodles for a month. This season H&M is playing with color, mostly golds, which look best on warm tones and purples, which look best on cool tones.

If you really have some time on your hands, go to Marshall’s or TJ Maxx. You can always find a treasure within the jungle. These stores can give you pleasant surprises along the way, like the Coach purses they sell right off the racks behind a few Guess and Esprit bags. Become friends with someone who works at one of these stores, so you can find out when these purses are in stock. Believe me, they go fast.

So now you have no excuse not to look just as fabulous as the stars. Work it ladies. Work it.

Healthy Diet for Women

A healthy diet is even more essential for women than men. As well as pregnancy, women have to cope with debilitating hormone irregularities which can impact adversely on both health and weight. Healthy eating won’t eliminate or cure these effects, but it often relieves symptoms. It’s worth remembering that some foods – especially fresh fruits and vegetables, contain chemicals which are believed to exercise a powerful beneficial effect on the human body.

Having a healthy diet is one of the most important things you can do to help your overall health. Along with physical activity, your diet is the key factor that affects your weight. Having a healthy weight for your height is important. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, breathing problems, arthritis, gallbladder disease, sleep apnea (breathing problems while sleeping), osteoarthritis, and some cancers.

Vitamins are organic compounds that your body needs for normal growth and health maintenance, but can’t make itself and must get from food or supplements. The way these vitamins function once ingested varies – fat-soluble vitamins like A and D tend to accumulate in the body and become toxic in large amounts, while water-soluble vitamins like C are flushed through the body on a daily basis. Minerals are inorganic substances necessary for the body to function properly.

Healthy Diet

Lean protein. The more active you are, the more protein you will need. Fresh fish, hormone-free chicken (try removing the skin to reduce the fat content), eggs, and lean meats like turkey or pork tenderloin are all good sources. Soy products can also provide protein, although some people are sensitive to soy and cannot digest it properly. The more variety you can incorporate into your diet, the better – so try and find different sources of lean protein every day.

Water – Most of us are dehydrated and don’t even know it. Fatigue, poor concentration and headaches are signs of mild dehydration. Keep bottled water in your office and filtered or bottled water at home; aim for eight glasses a day. Fizzy water is fine, too, and sure beats coffee or cola!

Nuts – A serving of nuts is 1/3 cup or a level handful for an average adult. A serving of peanut butter is two tablespoons, about the size of a golf ball.

Milk – We’ve all heard that milk products are rich sources of calcium, but did you know that they’re also loaded with protein? A glass of milk or a cup of yogurt has high-quality protein equal to an ounce of meat or cheese or to one egg. Try to choose reduced fat dairy products whenever possible. A glass of whole milk has the equivalent of two teaspoons of butter or three tablespoons of sour cream. That bit of added fat would probably be more enjoyable on a baked potato rather than hidden in your milk!

Bread, cereals, rice, pasta and noodles – grains and cereals come from a wide variety of sources including breakfast cereals (oats, muesli and wholegrain flakes), wholemeal breads and biscuits, rice, barley, corn and varieties of pasta.

Vegetables and legumes – raw or cooked vegetables can be used as a snack food or as a part of lunch and dinner. Salad vegetables can be used as a sandwich filling. Vegetable soup can make a healthy lunch. Stir-fries, vegetable patties and vegetable curries make nutritious evening meals. Try raw vegetables like carrot and celery sticks for a snack ‘on the run’.

Cultured condiments – such as fish sauce, apple vinegar, or homemade ketchup. These delicious condiments have high enzyme potential, which protects us from harmful substances in foods and facilitates absorption of vitamins and minerals

Tips for buying beauty and skin care products as gifts

You’ve made your list and you’re checking it twice. Then you spot that woman whose gift you’ve been agonizing over. Maybe you don’t know her well or you feel there’s nothing new to give her. Beauty and skin care gifts make great presents for anyone on your list. No matter a woman’s beauty or lifestyle, there are certain beauty and skin care products that all women use. Cleanser, moisturizer, body wash, and shampoo are a few of these.

Women have to wash their faces, no matter if they work in an office, at a construction site, or on the moon. Cleansers remove makeup, dirt, and chemicals from the skin to make it clean and healthy. If you know the person’s skin type, buy a product made specifically for that skin type. If you aren’t sure, buy products for oily/normal skin for young women and teens and dry/normal products for women in their thirties and beyond.

Moisturizers prevent skin from becoming dry and help lay a smooth foundation for makeup application. Choose moisturizers the same way as cleansers. When choosing a moisturizer, look for one that is made for your friend’s skin type and contains an SPF. Let the clerk know if your friend has sensitive skin in order to avoid ingredients that tend to irritate sensitive skin.

Body wash or bubble bath are also examples of beauty products that all women use. Choose light scents that will appeal to most women. There are numerous stores in malls that carry such products. Sample various products before making your decision. Throw in a bottle of matching lotion and spritz if your friend enjoys wearing perfumes.

Shampoo and conditioners are also used by all women. Choose a product made for your friend’s hair. Products are available to add volume, protect color, and hydrate hair. Many salons offer great deals on sets of hair products during the holiday season.

Use this list to help begin your search for beauty products any woman would love. These are available in a wide price range that will fit any budget. Check a few stores before making a purchase to make sure you get a great product and a great deal.

Reproductive health – Part 3

In this wondrous technological age we live in, some of the most significant advances have occurred in the area of childbirth. No longer does a woman, or her male partner, have to be fertile or potent in order to experience the joys of motherhood.

It started with wives, whose husbands’ joysticks malfunctioned. A few years ago, In-Vitro Fertilization, or IVF, became popular. This basically involved having test tube babies through artificial insemination. Then fertile single women, who wanted children without the nuisance of a live-in male partner slobbering all over them and getting in their hair, started getting the job done by visiting sperm banks. Now even this is becoming old hat.

Janice is a 39 year old woman living in England. When Janice was 29, her uterus had to be removed due to a medical condition. I suppose she initially resigned herself to never experiencing the joys of motherhood but no longer.

Recently Janice read about Dr. Naina Patel from Anand in India, who has become universally renowned for bringing about a surrogacy revolution. So last September, Janice headed to Anand to consult with Dr. Patel. Janice discovered to her delight that not only will she have a baby; she really does not have to anything at all except to pay for the service.

Here’s how it will work? Dr. Patel will locate a suitable Indian sperm donor and then impregnate a healthy Indian female, who will carry the baby to full term and delivery. All Janice has to do is to show up nine months later and her pick up her ready-made baby. Janice will fork out about $30,000 for the service still cheap, considering that a similar procedure in Britain would cost $200,000.

In my personal opinion, since Janice will have no biological connection with her baby, I don’t understand why she does not just adopt one. It could be that adoption agencies may be reluctant to give a baby to a single woman. Is there any law regarding this in the US?

Janice, at least, has the excuse for seeking surrogacy because she is medically unable to conceive. Some fertility clinics have been approached by perfectly healthy young women, who want to experience the joys of motherhood without the inconvenience of pregnancy and the agony of childbirth. They want an instant baby, as it were.

I am aware that we are living in an age of easy convenience and instant gratification, but this is carrying a bit too far.

How feminists are using feminist rhetoric to scam other women – Part 3

It is very sad but true. As a woman and individual I am strongly against feminist agenda because its agenda is taken to far bringing harm to families and used even for economic manipulation because of trust it created by wining some very important rights for women.

I am not saying that there are no man who are crooks but I have experienced some financial exploitation by woman who pretended friendship while taking advantage of me, when I realized this and refused to be treated this way, the “friendship” finished very quickly.

It also happened that I have been approached with an offer of joining multilevel marketing companies more often by women than man which I continue to refuse because it renders pay to those on higher levels for the work of those on lower levels which is in my opinion unethical.

So, yes I do agree that at large feminist minded women are using their rhetoric to scam mainly women, I have also seen such women destroying marriages of other women by demonizing their husbands with some tragic consequences to their life and that of their children.

Best body wash products for men – Part 4

Of the various men’s body wash products available, Adidas’s product line is a cut above the rest. Developed with athletes, the body wash is strong enough to handle extreme sweat and odor, gentle enough for frequent use without overdrying, and comes in four deliciously attractive scents.

Adidas has struck the perfect balance of creating a nice fragrance without it being overpowering. The four scents are Team Force, Dynamic Pulse, Ice Dive, and Sport Fever. While the names aren’t super indicative of the scents, all four are crisp and masculine, with a hint of spiciness.

Complementing the line of body wash are Adidas’s deodorant body sprays, which can be used in place of both deodorant and cologne, and match nicely with the body wash scent. Like the body wash, Adidas’s body spray is pleasant and manly without being overpowering.

(Ladies – if you do the shopping for ALL the household’s body wash, Adidas just came out with a line of women’s products as well. My boyfriend, being a huge fan of the men’s wash, was excited about this, and picked me up a bottle. It’s excellent! The scent is light and feminine without being sweet or flowery. It moisturizes better than anything I’ve tried, and also works really well as a shaving lotion.)

For an excellent men’s body wash, be sure to try Adidas. Your man and your nose with thank you!
